In a study of
elite athletes, the contribution of the aerobic, ATP-CP and lactic energy
systems were measured. The systems
contributions were estimated as 120 ± 22 kJ (66 ± 6%),
54 ± 21 kJ (30 ± 6%) and 8.5 kJ (4 ± 2%)
respectively. Therefore, training sessions should be directed mainly to the
improvement of the aerobic system (responsible by the recovery process between
high-intensity actions) and the anaerobic ATP-CP system (responsible by the
high-intensity actions) [7]. These
results will vary depending on the intensity of the bout, the athlete’s age,
gender and genetics and level of fitness which is determined by the
ability to consume oxygen and is called oxygen uptake (VO2). The highest possible oxygen intake is VO2max
or maximal oxygen uptake. Oxygen uptake
is expressed as millilitres or litres per minute and it is related to body
size. It is expressed in millilitres of
oxygen consumed per kilogram of body weight per minute (mL/kg/min) [2]. While the aerobic system is used for a higher percentage of time in taekwondo
(approximately 66%), the ATP-CP system is used for approximately 30% of time
during faster, shorter and
higher intensity bursts of kicking. A
round goes for 2 minutes and there are 1 minute breaks between each round of
which there are three rounds. Kicking
earns the most amount of points so therefore it is important for both systems
(but particularly the ATP-CP system) to be trained as this is where the athlete
will earn their points.

I performed to the best of my ability. My flexibility was not at a high level but I put in 100% effort and I was motivated to try and achieve the highest level that I could. My aerobic fitness is at a high level due to my participation in other competitive sports including tennis, soccer, futsal and cross country running. Taekwondo isn’t a sport that particularly interests me, although I do have respect for why people enjoy it so much, as it requires a high level of discipline, mental strength and fitness.
